If you are considering pressure washing your business, there are some things you can do to get ready for the job that will save time and make it easier on the crew doing the job. If you are not familiar with the process, ask the company you are working with for any specifics, but in the meantime, here are some general things you can do to help.

Close All Doors and Windows

Before you start washing down your building, make sure all the windows and doors are secure. It does not take much of an opening for the water to find it's a way in, so even a window that is open a little bit can let a lot of water into the building. If there is a computer or other equipment near the window, damage from the water is very likely.

Wet Down the Area

If you have landscape and plants around your building, it is important to soak them down with clear water before the pressure washing begins. The overspray from the pressure washing process can get on your plants, and if you are using chemicals in the washer, the plants could be affected. Putting a coating of clear water on first will help to protect them and encourage the chemicals to run off.

The best solution is to use a safe, biodegradable soap to clean the outside of your building, but depending on how many years of grime are on the building, that may not be possible.

Cover Your Electrical Outlets

If you have electrical outlets in the landscaping outside, covering them is a good idea. They may be in weatherproof boxes, but the boxes may not stand up to a high-pressure blast from the pressure washer. The high-pressure pumps on these machines create an extremely high amount of pressure, and the stream is focused to boost the pressure even more. Covering the boxes with plastic and then setting a five-gallon bucket over them can create a protective barrier against the water.

Keep People Away

While the building is undergoing pressure washing, it is a good idea to keep as many people as possible out of the area. The pressure coming from the nozzle of the pressure washer can cause injuries, and if you are not careful, someone could easily get hurt during this process. Also, if you are using chemicals of any kind in the pressure washer, the chemicals could be harmful to people not properly protected.
