To ensure that you get the most out of your self storage unit, effective and strategic organization is key. It is a good to have a plan of how you will arrange your items in the storage unit prior to arriving at the self storage facility to unload your belongings. To streamline and simplify the process, here are three tips.

Tip #1: Label Your Boxes

It is important that you maintain a running inventory of the items that you pack into boxes. As you go, you should label each box with a symbol or number that will correspond with your list, allowing you to keep up with what contents are in each box. It is also a good idea to draw an easy-to-read diagram that outlines the location of all of your boxes inside of the self storage unit so that it will be easy to find the box that you need when you need a specific item in the future.

Tip #2: Distribute the Weight

One of the most effective ways to save space in your unit is to stack your boxes on top of each other. It is important to take into consideration the weight of each and every box when utilizing this particular method and that the heaviest boxes are always placed at the bottom of each stack that is created. Stacks should be limited to about three boxes, as this will help minimize damage in the event that a box collapses. No matter what a box with fragile items should never be placed at the bottom of the stack.

Tip #3: Put the Furniture in First

Because furniture is heavy and bulky, it should always go into the self storage unit first and before anything else. There are two effective ways of organizing furniture in the unit after it is has been packed and protected properly. The first is to place each against the wall in a vertical position. The second is to stack the pieces seat-to-seat with other pieces of furniture like love seats, couches, chairs, etc. that are also being stored. Both of these methods are extremely space-efficient and will allow plenty of room in the unit for additional items and boxes; it is simply a matter of preference when it comes down to choosing which one you want to use.
