If you're like most homeowners with old plain decks outside, you and your family probably don't spend a lot of time on it. But with just a little work, that deck could serve as a useful and comfortable space for your family to utilize throughout the year. Here's what you can do to turn your old deck into a new and exciting place to spend time on:

Hang an Herb Garden

Make cooking more convenient and easily spruce all your meals up by hanging a small container herb garden on the exterior wall above your deck. If you hang it right next to the door, you can quickly get outside and grab what you need for the kitchen when prepping for a meal. The herb garden will add some depth and style to the deck too, which will make it a more pleasant place to spend time while resting or reading a book. And many herbs, such as basil can help repel mosquitos so they'll be less likely to bug you when you're spending time on the deck.

Invest in Solar Lighting

You can make it comfortable to spend time on your deck during the evening hours by installing a couple of solar lights on or near the deck. Installing a motion sensing light will ensure that the deck gets illuminated every time someone sets foot on it, so they don't have to worry about turning a light on by hand. Installing a solar light with a dimmer on it will allow you to control the amount of lighting that you get while spending time on the porch. You can keep the light really dim while stargazing or turn the light up while entertaining friends.

Incorporate Some Furniture

If there is nothing to sit on and no place to put a drink down, you and your kids probably won't want to spend a lot of time on the deck. Therefore, it's a good idea to invest in some exterior furniture that's comfortable and inviting so you can spend time on the deck just like you would in your living room when the weather permits. In addition to a couch or love seat, include put a couple of stackable chairs in the corners so they can be quickly and easily set up when guests come over. You can also install an outdoor shelving unit on the wall where toys and a tub of games can be stored.

Install Aluminum Balusters

One of the most important things you can do to make your deck more inviting and comfortable is to install aluminum balusters and railings if you don't already have them. The balusters will enhance the look and feel of your deck and help keep your kids and pets safe while playing on it. They'll also help keep unwanted animals from getting onto your deck when you aren't out there to shoo them away. Aluminum deck balusters will hold up well to the outdoor weather elements with little maintenance, and they won't get scuffed and scratched as wooden balusters will.
